Chapter Five

(And the first puzzle sorted)

They soon found themselves running north (Jenny had a cold) (Prize to anyone who can work that one out). Well, Luke almost died of shock by doing excercise, but Anthony and Taku had done so many partridges in pear trees, that they could have kept on going for ages.

But they didn't need to, because they soon arrived at a B&B in a funny town which seemed to have as many people living in cardboard boxes as Taku's girlfriend had had people in... yes, well, as Stephen would say, "A bloody lot, yeah." Anyway, this place was ramshackle to the power of Taku's head.

The B&B was closed, but there was a sign on the door:

GONE OUT FOR A WHILE, BE BACK SOON. THERE'S A BRICK ON THE LEFT, CHUCK IT THROUGH THE WINDOW AND LET YOURSELF IN

Just as they were starting to wonder if there was an unbroken window to put the brick through, or whether they'd have to use someone else's hole (And a bloody lot, yeah), the owner of the place came back. He was in a severe state of shock - even worse than Luke, who was having withdrawl symptoms from being away from his computer for so long - and they only caught a few words of what he said:

"... sitting happily ... Vanessa ... panic ... terror ... help me!"

They assumed this meant "Yeah, sure, I've got a room for you," so they took the man, who, after he'd calmed down a bit, said his name was Matt, into the house.

They decided that anywhere with such mad, blond, men and women living in houses where even the skylights had holes in must be worse (just) than Manchester, so lo and behold, and jump up and down until you make a big hole in the floor, they realised they'd found the first answer. "Yeah," stated Stephen in a particularly celebratory tone of voice.
