Which he did, and soon found himself heading in the right direction (fortunate for him that east was to the right, or he would have got very confused). And after a short walk, he was mingling with the horses.
He watched them, bending down to eat the grass, and then raise their heads to look at him, with a sort of 'what the hell do you think you are?' gaze.
But Ian got that look from most people, so he ignored it, and just sat and watched them nodding up and down to get their grass.
And then it hit him.
For once it was not one of the horses hooves that hit him, but a realisation. This realisation had been sneaking up on him, and had finally hit him, hard, right on the top of his head.
He glanced up to the sign of the stables, to look for the name of the place he was sitting, watching theses animals.
And there it was, a 'joke' name, cos someone had been amused by the horses nodding to and fro:
"The Land of Nod".
And Ian was so happy that he had found his quarry, that he went to dig in it, and then went to give a big hug to one of the horses.
And then it hit him.
But then he was a particularly silly bloke.
